Disaster Relief Australia Calls for Volunteers to Support Communities in Need

Sydney, Australia – September 26, 2024 – Disaster Relief Australia (DRA), an award-winning disaster recovery organisation, is issuing an urgent call for volunteers to join its mission of providing life-changing assistance to communities struck by natural disasters. From devastating floods and raging bushfires to destructive cyclones and global pandemics, DRA stands ready to help communities during their most vulnerable times.

DRA unites military veterans and skilled volunteers with emergency services expertise to deliver vital aid to disaster-affected regions. Since its formation in 2016, DRA has grown into a powerful force of more than 2,500 volunteers and 10 local Disaster Relief Teams operating throughout Australia. Globally, DRA has provided significant support to areas in need, deploying teams to the most challenging disaster environments.

As the impact of natural disasters continues to intensify across Australia and beyond, DRA is calling on everyday Australians to contribute their skills and passion to make a lasting difference. Volunteers can take part in DRA’s critical disaster response operations, delivering essential services that help rebuild communities and restore hope in the aftermath of catastrophe.

A Rewarding Way to Serve

Volunteering with DRA offers a unique and fulfilling opportunity to serve those in need. Whether through physical deployments to disaster-stricken regions or supporting efforts from home, every contribution counts.

“Disaster recovery work is incredibly rewarding,” says David Smith AM, CSC, DSM, CEO of DRA. “Deploying with DRA provides a chance to directly impact the lives of those affected by disaster, often during the darkest moments of their lives. Our volunteers are critical to the recovery process and represent the best of Australia’s spirit of service and community.”

DRA’s volunteers come from all walks of life, including military veterans, emergency responders, and passionate civilians. By bringing together this diverse group of individuals, DRA is able to leverage a wide range of expertise and experience, creating a powerful, unified response force.

Since its inaugural mission to Proserpine in 2017, where DRA helped in cyclone recovery efforts, the organisation has become a leader in disaster response, demonstrating its unique ability to support recovery efforts swiftly and effectively. DRA’s rapid deployment model, combined with the strong leadership and dedication of its volunteers, ensures that communities receive immediate and sustained relief following disasters.

Recognised for Excellence: Australian Charity of the Year

DRA’s innovative approach to disaster recovery has earned the organisation national recognition. In 2023, DRA was honoured with the Australian Charity of the Year Award, recognizing its exceptional work in disaster preparedness and recovery.

Through initiatives like Project Resilience and Big Map exercises, DRA has taken proactive measures to prepare communities for future disaster events. By working closely with local governments, emergency services, and other partners, DRA helps communities build resilience, ensuring they are better equipped to handle future challenges.

“This award highlights the incredible capability of our volunteers and our organisation as a whole,” Smith explains. “We are proud to lead the way in disaster recovery, and we are always looking for more people to join our efforts. Whether you’re a veteran looking to continue serving or a civilian wanting to make a positive impact, there is a place for you at DRA.”

How to Get Involved

Disaster Relief Australia offers a variety of ways for individuals to get involved. Whether through volunteering on the front lines, forming corporate partnerships, or making financial contributions, everyone can play a role in helping communities recover from disaster.

Disaster relief volunteers are integral to DRA’s operations, helping to bring immediate and long-term relief to those affected. By joining DRA’s volunteer network, you can make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals, families, and entire communities. No prior experience is necessary – DRA provides training and support to all volunteers.

“Joining DRA is more than just helping in times of need; it’s about being a force for good in the world,” says Smith. “There is no greater satisfaction than knowing you’ve helped someone rebuild their life after disaster has struck.”
